November 14, 2009 - ILLINOIS CME COURSES ON PRESCRIBING OPIODS FOR CHRONIC PAIN
Educational
Objectives
On
completing this course,
participants should be able to:
?
Understand
the nature
of chronic pain and
options
for its treatment.
?
Select
patients who are
appropriate candidates
for
pain therapy with opioids, including
methadone.
?
Educate
patients about
methadone's unique
pharmacologic
properties, such as its long
duration
of action and absence of euphoric
effect
(because lack of knowledge of these
characteristics
on the part of physicians
and
patients
has contributed to inadvertent
overdoses
and
fatalities).
?
Follow
a careful,
evidence-based protocol for
starting
patients on opioid analgesic
therapy,
including
methadone, whether from a
drug-naive
state
or in transition from another short-
or longacting
opioid
analgesic.
?
Take
appropriate steps
to monitor for effectiveness
of
the medications and to minimize the
potential
for diversion, abuse, or
addiction.
Continuing
Medical Education Credits

Program
Description
Do
you
prescribe opioid medications?
If
so, this
program is for you.
Each
year, millions of patients are
treated for a variety of serious
medical
conditions with prescription
drugs whose therapeutic
benefits
are accompanied by
psychoactive effects. Recent indicators
reveal
that the misuse and abuse of
prescription drugs are rising,
and
we are faced with the challenge of
minimizing the potential
for
misuse without impeding patients’
access to needed medical
care.
This symposium will provide
specific knowledge and skills
associated
with safe prescribing and
will cover areas of epidemiology,
legal
and regulatory issues, as well
as clinical strategies for managing
difficult
patient situations.
Who
Should Attend
This
program is designed for all
clinicians practicing in primary
care
settings — physicians, nurse
practitioners, physicians
assistants
and others — who prescribe
opioid medications and
who
care for patients receiving opioid
medications.
