Dr. Volkow gives her prespective on ABAM

Nora Volkow, MD, Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, gives BHC Journal her Professional Perspective today about joining with leadership of the new American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) on Saturday, May 2, to give certificates to the nation’s first board-certified Addiction Medicine physicians. The board is the first to certify Addiction Medicine physicians across a range of medical and surgical specialties, from emergency medicine to pediatrics. Also today on BHC Journal, Susan Lucak, MD, of Columbia University Medical Center talks on what therapists need to know about irritable bowel syndrome. And Thomas Deitzler talks on how young adult treatment programs at Caron offer care tailored to young lives undergoing the transition to adulthood.

Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act – HHS RFI

On April 28, 2009, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published in the Federal Register a Request for Information (RFI) from the three federal government agencies principally responsible for implementing the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act. HHS, the Department of Labor, and the Internal Revenue Service are seeking information and advice from the public addressing critical issues surrounding the best ways to implement and fulfill the objectives of this act. Among the issues that the departments are seeking information on are efficiency and cost-effective ways of implementing this law, as well as information that would be helpful in the development of regulations needed to implement this law. All comments must be received by May 28, 2009, to one of the three departments listed below.
